“And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.” – John 17.11
Jesus’ ascension was a process. It began with his death, continued with his resurrected state, and concluded with his being taken up and hidden from the disciples sight by the clouds (Acts 1.9). The text wisely doesn’t say that Jesus was taken up to heaven. It simply says Jesus was hidden by clouds – leaving the whole event and Jesus’ whereabouts as a living mystery.
As the church approaches celebrating Pentecost June 4th, it is useful to remember that our spiritual journey, like Jesus’, is a process of returning to God. As we release our grasp on our life as “our own,” we receive more of God’s Life in Christ, as the All in All. Our self disappears little by little, and in its place the state of Christ appears in us (e.g. Galatians 2.20). Enjoy the journey into the Mystery!
